Eraman, officially the Kingdom of Eraman, is an island country in the Melayu Archipelago. The federal constitutional monarchy consists of nine states. It shares a land border with Samudera Darussalam and maritime border with Pemecutan, Sharktail and Southern Palm Islands. Anara is the national capital and largest city while Daulapura is the royal seat of the monarch. The country's population is 14,753,910.

Eraman is ethnically, culturally and linguistically diverse. About half of the population is ethnically Malay, with large minorities of Girian, Mandaran and Palmyran. Malay and English are recognized as the official languages of Eraman. The economy is mainly fuelled by its natural resources but is expanding in the sectors of commerce, manufacturing and tourism.

Etymology

There are many theories about the origin of the name Eraman. The most popular etymology is "order" (in old Javanese: krama). "Kramadvipa" was the word used by ancient Malay, Javanese, Girian, Mandaran and Palmyran traders when referring to the island. It is the combination of the word "krama" and Sanskrit suffix "dvipa" meaning continent.

Some local historians have suggested that Eraman was named after Hanuman, the Hindu god whom locals believed spent the rest of his life in Puncakpura after the Kurukshetra War.

History

Politics

Eraman is a federal constitutional monarchy. The head of state is the Maharaja, commonly referred to as the King. The King's role has been largely ceremonial.

Legislative power is divided between federal and state legislatures. The bicameral federal parliament consists of the lower house, the People's Council and the upper house, the Royal Council. The 111-member People's Council is elected for a maximum term of five years from single-member constituencies. All 35 members of the Royal Council sit for three-year terms; 18 are elected by the 9 state assemblies, and the remaining 17 are appointed by the King.

The parliament follows a multi-party system and the government is elected through a first-past-the-post system. Parliamentary elections are held at least once every five years. Registered voters of age 21 and above may vote for the members of the People's Council and the state legislative chamber.

Executive power is vested in the Cabinet, led by the Bendahara. The Bendahara must be a member of the People's Council, who in the opinion of the King, commands the support of a majority of members. The Cabinet is chosen from members of both houses of Parliament. The Bendahara is both the head of cabinet and the head of government.

Administrative divisions

Eraman is a federation of 9 states. Each state is divided into districts.

State governments are led by Chief Ministers, who are state assembly members from the majority party in the assembly.

Mitra and Soma have considerably more autonomy than the other states, most notaby having separate immigration policies and controls, and a unique residency status.
